Middle School Logic

Student: I can't do this! I've already gone through 4 copies because I keep messing up!

Me: So why don't you just finish it, with all its mistakes, then rewrite it perfectly.

Student: Okay. Aaaagh, I can't. I can't work with this color paper! (Points to cherry colored assignment).

Me: Well...why don't you write this on a separate sheet of notebook paper?

Student: Ooooh, what a good idea--I can do that!

Me: (silent sigh).

Oh, the Innocence!

So as part of a vocabulary lesson (2 years ago), I asked students to sketch someone being magnanimous, or very generous to someone less powerful than oneself. The picture below was what one student drew. I don't know about you, but I was shocked when I saw it:

Me: So, so-and-so, tell me what you drew there...

So-and-so Student: Sure thing! It's a person helping someone up who fell down!

Me: Oh, right...

Is my mind just in the gutter, or does this look like something else?? (The one standing up even has a little butt!)

Santa Claus is Worse than a 15th C. Monarch

It is days like today that make me realize that in the company of adults, my sense of humor is shared. In the company of 13 and 14 years olds? I'm just gross.

We have been reading articles arguing for and against the existence of Santa Claus in preparation for our big "Santa Claus Debate" just before Christmas Break. Today an article argued that Santa can exist because it is actually his offspring carrying on the legacy! The evidence? Well, Santa came around in the 1600s, and statistics note that the average number of generations per century is 3.5. If you do all of that long, complicated math (don't forget, Santa's kids would have kids, who would have kids, who would have kids...), we realize that today there would be approximately 1.25 BILLION Claus descendants! The gross part still to come...

So the author continues to say that the reason we don't notice that all of the mall Santas--and those ringing those infamous bells out of every store you could possibly be visiting during the holiday season--are different is because all of the Claus males look the same! The evidence for this one? Well, the Claus family lives in the North Pole, at the very tippy top, where they are the only human beings. Therefore, in order to produce offspring, they must participate in inbreeding. By this point in the article, I'm just giggling at the absolutely brutal yet hilarious honesty of the author. However, my students had a much different response.

My students: ... *eyes wide, mouths agape*
Me (not realizing that their silence was because they did get it): That means that they would have to have babies together.
My students: Ewwwwwwwwwwww! (And the rest of the article was lost on them).

I can't wait to see if I get a parent e-mail tonight accusing me of telling the kiddos that Santa had babies with his daughters. That'll be a hoot to explain to the boss!

Llama Neighbors

Who knew we had llamas living next door to our old condo complex?!

Uinta at Wheeler Farm

Ms. Fitch's Class

Now that it's summer, I can post about my kiddos without it stressing me out.

1. Some of my boys building an "earthquake safe fort" during The Great Shake (a statewide earthquake drill).

2. Praise for...me!

3. "Creepy Man"--a.k.a. the narrator--from our The Tell Tale Heart haunted house, House of Poe.

4. Emily sleeping on the mask for House of Poe after spending 7 hours after school setting up (without overtime pay...)

5. Yep, it's official, my students MUST be doing drugs if they have nice things to say about me :)

Summerness!

Here are some random pictures from summer:

1. One of my best friends/coworkers, Emily, skillfully walking on a giant...spool?

2. Uinta digging for Lord knows what.

3. Me and Cory at the zoo.

Adult Furniture!

Cory and I are finally starting to feel like adults: 90% of the house is painted (pictures to come), we have art in our living room, and we got a new, custom made sectional for our living room!

We also got a new bedroom set, but it hasn't yet been delivered at this point the only part of the house that needs a surface makeover is the part everyone sees--the yard. Unfortunately, we're all out of money in our house savings fund for now, so the yard will have to wait!

Utah Arts Festival

Cory and I bought our first piece of art! Part of it was a generous housewarming gift from Cory's parents, Kris and Sean.
